Hybrid Digital KBBI is on the Air

KBBI FM is still a dream in the planning stages, but near-FM quality stereo broadcasts on the AM dial are a reality now. Almost-FM KBBI can be heard with an HD radio.

And yes, it is in stereo! Music shows like Slacktide, Beggar’s banquet, World Café, and others can be heard in stereo. You’ll notice the difference right away.

HD stands for "Hybrid Digital". You can still listen on your current analog radios because the hybrid digital channel is combined into an unused portion of the the 890AM signal. The analog signal is still there, and the new HD receivers know how to decode the digital part of the transmission and give you the new, improved channel.

In fact, KBBI's experimental live MP3 stream originates from an HD radio receiver. The real on-air broadcast has much higher quality, but you'll get the idea.

We don’t have any particular recommendations on where to get an HD radio, but they are available from various sources, and we are seeing the prices come down. Like most new technology, the prices are generally high at first, but as demand goes up, the prices go down.

Reception is free, and there is no subscription cost. However, KBBI is listener supported, and your contributions do make this service possible. We'll mention this in the upcoming pledge drive on Friday, October 3rd.

If you are curious about this new capability, please give the station a call. 235-7721. We even have a working radio that you can hear during regular business hours if you're really, really curious. We're at 3913 Kachemak Way.
