Inspirational Spot
When shades of night softly gather, I feel an overwhelming love for God, my dearest Friend.  He walks beside me in sunshine and in shadow.  He laughs with me through happy times, and takes away the pain when illness or sorrow try to tear my world to pieces.

November 2008

We are KNOM AM & FM, "Yours For Western Alaska."  The oldest Catholic radio station in the United States. KNOM strives to inform, uplift, inspire and entertain remote western Alaska listeners throughout a 100,000+ square mile signal area. We are a critical communications link, ready to broadcast life-saving information, while inspiring listeners with positive radio programming.

Winter has arrived with a flourish!  Winter storms moved across western Alaska bringing up to eight inches of snow and winds up to 55 miles per hour.  The first winter weather warning was issued by the National Weather Service and broadcast over KNOM.

Each remote community gets detailed forecasts, watches and warnings according to their regional weather forecast.  These forecasts are assembled by meteorologists in Anchorage and Fairbanks, and our local National Weather Service professionals in Nome.

Over the years, KNOM has saved many lives through these hourly forecast broadcasts.  We are also a key communications center during winter weather emergencies, and high seas and flood watches and warnings.  Many times KNOM staff is reporting from the areas affected by these storms.

We are very pleased to announce our newest KNOM staff member and Public Affairs Director, Laureli Kineen.  She grew up listening to KNOM in Unalakleet, Alaska.  KNOM meant so much to her, after journalism classes at University of Alaska in Fairbanks, and devoting time to her two children at home, she chose to serve the people of western Alaska through this critical radio ministry.  She is a real blessing to us all.

KNOM announces and celebrates the many positive organizations and events sponsored by caring people who seek to nurture and encourage healthy and responsible activities and educational experiences.  We assisted a local Health Corporation with their seasonal health fair.  At the event, moms, dads and young children were spread out among the exhibition and organization booths.  One little girl told me, “…I’m getting a flu shot and a pumpkin and some grapes.”  Her mom smiled and told me how much she appreciated KNOM’s support for the families.  Fresh produce is more than double the ‘lower 48’ prices, so eating healthy is a tremendous challenge.

The KNOM staff and volunteers make a positive difference in the community.  They volunteer as EMTs, teach youth-at-risk, serve on Rotary, Broadcasting, Arts and other community boards, coach Special Olympics athletes, help organize the local ‘Walk for the Cure’ Breast Cancer event, and help the local food bank stock shelves to feed people who will spend their meager earnings on heating oil this winter.  They also teach, organize, support, read and lead in their church.

We continue to honor the commitment by everyone involved with the Alaska Radio Mission and KNOM to make a real difference during these difficult times.
