Union Reps Make Budget Proposal

SACRAMENTO (AP) - The union that represents state workers has
come up with its own budget proposal for California. The state
council of the Service Employees International Union crafted its
plan after state lawmakers failed last week to reach an agreement
to shore up the state’s $11 billion deficit. It’s unlikely the
union’s plan will gain much traction. It doesn’t cut any programs,
it raises taxes by $14.2 billion and relies on $15 billion from the
federal government.

Gay and Lesbian Lawmakers Take Stand Against Prop 8

SACRAMENTO (AP) - Gay and lesbian lawmakers want the Legislature
to take a stand against California’s gay marriage ban. They have
introduced a non-binding resolution opposing Proposition 8. It says
the voter-approved initiative was an improper revision of the state
constitution. Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg also
sponsored the measure.

Chico City Council Selects New Mayor

Chico’s new mayor is Ann Schwabb.  The former Vice Mayor takes over the figurehead position after being selected at Tuesday night’s Chicocity Council meeting. Re-elected councilors Andy Holcombe, Larry Wahl, Schwab, and newcomer Jim Walker were sworn in at the meeting.  Tom Nikel becomes the new Vice Mayor.

Tehama County Standoff

(UPDATE)     GERBER, Calif. (AP) - The man suspected of shooting a California
Highway Patrol officer in Northern California before a standoff
with police is dead. Police say 60-year-old James Long was found
dead yesterday of a gunshot wound on the kitchen floor of the house
where he had barricaded himself in Tehama County. Officer David
Madrigal was hit in the knee as police responded to the call.

A man with access to several weapons in Gerber remains in a standoff this hour (3:00 PM) with more than 50 law enforcement officers.  The incident on Reno Avenue started this morning at around 11am when the suspect, James Long, shot officer David Madrigal in the knee.  Sheriff Clay Parker says Long became violent when his wife decided to turn off internet accident.  The officer then arrived and a shootout ensued.  Nearby Gerber Elementary School remained in voluntary lockdown most of the day.

Air Quality Poor Today

Butte County Air Quality officials are asking Chico residents not to light wood stoves or fireplaces today.  A “Check Before You Light Advisory” has been issued by the Air Quality Management District.  Air Quality is forecasting an air quality index of unhealthy for sensitive groups.

Gov Tells New Lawmakers To Get To Work On Budget

     SACRAMENTO (AP) - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has again declared
a fiscal emergency and called lawmakers into a special session to
deal with California’s more than $11 billion budget deficit. The
governor says the state will run out of cash by February if there
isn’t bold action. Lawmakers failed to reach a compromise during
the special session Schwarzenegger declared last month, pushing the
problem to the new Legislature that was sworn in yesterday.

Woman ID’d In Fatal Mt. Shasta Fall

MOUNT SHASTA, Calif. (AP) - Siskiyou County authorities have

released the name of a 33-year-old New York woman who was killed

Friday while climbing Mount Shasta. Chihiro Enoki of Brooklyn died of

head injuries suffered when she fell at least 600 feet while climbing the

14,000-foot peak with two men.

 

Keene Eyes Senate

North State Assemblyman Rick Keene is starting an exploratory committee for a possible run at the Senate.  Keene’s camp sent letters to District leaders recently asking for donations.  Keene says he doesn’t want to make a decision until his work is done in the assembly.  He says more than likely a decision will be made after the first of the year.  If Keene does run, it will set up a showdown between himself and Assemblyman Doug LaMalfa for the Fourth District Senate seat currently held by Sam Aanestad.

Bush: ‘I’m Sorry’ the Economic Crisis is Occurring

WASHINGTON (AP) - President George W. Bush is expressing remorse that the global financial crisis has cost jobs and damaged retirement accounts. The president told ABC’s “World News” in an interview that he will support additional federal intervention, if necessary, to ease the recession. The interview will air Monday night. Bush told the network: “I’m sorry it’s happening, of course.” The National Bureau of Economic Research reported on Monday that the U.S. economy fell into a recession in December 2007.
