[11/26/08] Thanksgiving Around the World Party!
Hello curious listeners,
While we do not celebrate Thanksgiving worldwide, we all can feel good with family unity of music and laughter through the celebration of music!
We will freely hear Indian world party music from my favorite world music dance label from Germany, Norwegian sounds, my favorite song from the last Forro in the Dark album, rocking out with Juana M., and more freeform world music party mix!
You can hear my party mix at a little film fest traveling to Northern New England for the Thanksgiving leftovers weekend called the MergingArts Short Short Story Film Festival.
Enjoy!

[11/23/08] The Bays
This is the inauguration of The Kitchen blog. OK? There.
There are live electronic acts, like Daft Punk and Justice and Skylab 2000 and Mike Hoska, and then there are live electronic acts like the one I came across after the show this morning. Surprising that I never heard of The Bays, since they've been gigging the world for at least 10 years and they're really, really awesome. And it was that much more amazing when I found out there are no setlists (not so much as a premeditated song for that matter), no sequencers, and... no albums for sale.
The Bays are somewhat fluid in membership and like to collaborate. There are currently four players: Andy Gangadeen (drums), Chris Taylor (bass), Jamie Odell (keyboards) and Simon Richmond (effects/samples). Although each of these guys has a few stories to tell about famous artists they've worked with (from Art of Noise to The Spice Girls) an astute house music fan will recognize Odell as the man behind Jimpster, the veteran house music phenom who just can't seem to stop putting out the lushest deep house tracks. (Try a recent favorite: "Message For The DJ.") This may give you a hint as to the severity of the rhythms in store in their trove of live recordings. And on the collaboration side you'll run into people like Herbie Hancock and Richard Barbieri, or various and sundry orchestras and lesser known musical phenomena. Did I mention the only preparation for these gigs they've been playing around the world is... none at all? You could scarcely be called a fanatic if you referred to this take-no-prisoners improvisational approach as "revolutionary."
I always wondered how someone could listen to Phish or the Dead every day of their life. But I have been listening to The Bays all day now... and I think I understand.

[11/22/08] This music will change your life.
Tonight's show was a life affirming journey of both epic frolic and subsequent desolation. I'll start off you indie kids with some nice folksy rock to draw you in, and then the annihilating rays of bat-shit craziness will rend your lobes asunder with psychedelic destruction (in the most pleasant way imaginable.)
Have a listen.

[11/20/08] Do the Runnin' Man
Hey all,
This week's episode of Ampersand Theater is centered around lame or fake raps ! You will hear a lot of this in songs by artists emerging from the 70s punk movment who were transitioning into a new era of music (Blondie with "Rapture," for instance).
I am also interested in songs that feature raps for purely commercial purposes (I believe this is the catalyst for Adam Ant's "Ant Rap." YIKES.). Anything cheesy, especially raps ABOUT raps.
Did you know Ron Jeremy had his own rap? It's true!
