Another two day project. I went with a tube rectifier and choke in
the power supply. It runs kind of hot, so for now I am using a
Whisper Fan on it ... blowing that nice transformer smell around.
The tubes are Dual Beam Power tubes with plate pins on top, and go
in ceramic "Septar" sockets - all in all - very cool looking !
The amp sounds nice - very clear and loud, not muddy.

I built this Darling for Tom Magalhaes of Tracy, CA.
He says it sounds great on a pair of Lowthers, plenty
of volume and no hum. He was amazed that 3/4 of a
watt could sound so good.
If you're in that area, stop into his restaurant Magellan's Restaurant

"Darling" 1626 Single Ended Triode

3/4 of a watt per channel
12SL7 Driver - 1626 Outputs - SS Rectifier

Schematic made with

1626's are from 1943 !

I built this bad boy in 2 days. The amp was
finished and just waiting for the tubes to arrive.
They came in the Christmas Eve mail !
I washed 62 years worth of dust from the 1626's,
plugged them in, and 12 seconds later this little
amp was playing and sounding very, very nice !
Take a look at The Darling Club for many great
and artistic examples of Darling amplifiers.
I guess mine is very industrial looking.

Dynaco SCA-35

about 17 watts per channel
7199 Drivers - 6BQ5/EL84 Outputs - SS Rectifier
Vintage: 1964

This bad boy sounds great
but runs pretty hot ! Note the fan.

I retubed this amp with a quad of JJ EL-84's and
put the 7199's from the recently stripped Heathkit AA-100 in it.

DIYTube ST-70 Driver Based Clone

about 35 watts per channel
12AU7 and 12AX7 Drivers - 7591 Outputs - GZ34/5AR4 Rectifier
Vintage: 2005
I finished this amplifier on 12/03/05
Update - I converted it to use 6BG6G's on 03/02/07

Built on a Yaeger Audio 17 x 12 x 2
black steel/aluminum chassis

Heathkit AA-100 transformers
and a DIYTube Driver Board

The power supply is built on a
turret board bought on eBay when
CCA Transmitters went bankrupt

I replaced the crappy
tube sockets with better ones
and converted to 6BG6G's

I bought a Heathkit AA-100 about 5 years ago, and recently
decided to restore it. I bought a quad of JJ 7591's BEFORE I saw
how nasty the output circuit board was in the amp. In fact, the
whole design of the AA-100 turned me off to the project. I am
using a DIYTube ST-70 driver board to drive the 7591's
and the Heathkit power and output transformers and rectifier.
This amp sounds sweet ! Check out DIYTube.com
for great forums with plenty of friendly advice and conversation.

Heathkit AA-151 Integrated EL-84

14 watts per channel
2-6EU7, 2-6AU6, 2-6AN8, 4-EL84/6BQ5, 1-GZ34/5AR4
Vintage: 1962?

It plays with a few buzzes and
hums and scratchy pots

some new tubes and sockets
and capacitors will fix that

I bought this on eBay a couple of years ago, and haven't done much with it yet.
It doesn't sound too bad, but the cheezy phenolic wafer tube sockets in the
preamp section have to go. Someone did a little repair work on it already,
and the basic build isn't bad. The basic design and chassis is decent.
On the SL-1200, Crosby, Stills and Nash stolen from WMGM, 01/23/1973 - and it's not
too scratchy even though it's been the test disc for my VW Bus Record Player !

13EM7/15EA7 (6EM7) Single Ended Triode

1 watt per channel
15EA7 - Dual Triode (Driver/Amp) Silicon Rectifiers
Vintage: 2005
Inspired by the "MiniBlok"by Fred Nachbaur and by the schematic at AudioHobbyist.com

Built on a recycled diecast
aluminum box - the front panel
holes were there, hence the imbalance

Hammond 125CSE audio transformers
from Angela Instruments
and some leftover parts

This little amp sounds as good as my 2A3 amp and 300B amp !
I have a pair of Klipsch KSB 3.1 speakers (96dB/1W@1M sensitivity) in my bedroom,
and this little one watt per channel amp is way loud with plenty of solid bass.
It doesn't have a conventional power transformer, instead, I am using two 12.6 VAC
filament transformers in parallel, powering the two 13 volt .45 amp filaments
and a reverse connected 12.6 VAC > 240 VAC transformer for the plate voltage.
I can hear a little bit of hum, so maybe I'll add some more capacitance to the
plate supply. Except for the tubes (eBay) and audio transformers (Angela)
I used parts I had from left over from other projects. I guess the next project
will be to figure out why the other amps don't sound a lot better than this one !

This ST-35 got me started with tube amps in about 1995.
I visited my friend Jim McCann, who was working at a radio station in Pittsburgh,
and had purchased a Dynaco ST-70 and PAS from an ad in the newspaper for about
$ 25 and cleaned up and restored them. The sound was magical ! I told my late
friend Don Powers about it, and the next day he showed up at my door dragging
this poor little ST-35 by the power cord. It had once lived on top of the
transmitter of radio station WDVR (aka WEAZ and WBEB) in the Roxboro "antenna
farm" in Philadelphia. I did some quick repairs, with new Penta Labs 6BQ5's
(you could still buy them at Kearn's Electronics locally !) and a pair of
7247's brought home from work. (haha seriously) I replaced the bad can
electrolytic with a little circuit board meant to replace the can capacitor
in an ITC Premium Line tape cartridge machine.

Who needs Gold RCA Jacks and Gold 5 Way Binding Posts ! I just hooked
this amp up for the first time in awhile and it still sounds great.
I'd like to say goodbye to Dave Kurtz, founder and original Chief Engineer
of WBEB, who passed away on Thanksgiving Day, 2005.
