Remember Our Veterans, Support Our Troops

Imagine being away from your family and friends for Christmas. Imagine putting your life on the line to protect the ones you love. Our troops who are serving around the world, especially in Iraq and Afghanistan, are doing that on a daily basis.

Now is YOUR chance to make a difference in the lives of those who selflessly serve their country to protect the people of America.

From October 6th to November 11th we will be collecting items to include in gift care packages for our troops this Christmas and we can’t do it without your help.

To get involved, see our complete list of care package items we are collecting. Then drop off the items at Vertical Radio Studios at 2103 West Main in Farmington.

Blue Star Mothers and Vertical Radio need your help. For a complete list of items to donate see below!

We are also making a CD of encouragement and prayers for each care package sent to the troops. Please call and leave a message of support for our troops at (505) 324-5225.

Get involved and partner with Vertical Radio and Blue Star Mothers to Remember Our Veterans and Support Our Troops!

An Extraordinary Father’s Day

by Wendy Curtin, host of the Lunch Crunch on KNMI

Most people spend Father’s Day honoring Dad.  They probably go to church together and maybe out for breakfast; treat him to a few gifts then round the day off with a backyard BBQ.  For my family, this Father’s Day was different.  We honored my husband Kelly, but we also honored our veteran’s and servicemen and most importantly our Heavenly Father.  We attended an event like nothing I have ever seen.  Nine artists, ten hours and hundreds of people:  featuring Mercy Me!

If you’re from the Four Corners area, you know that a huge event like this would typically be out of our grasp.  It would cost a family like mine hundreds of dollars to drive to Phoenix or Denver, buy tickets, rent a hotel room and feed everyone in restaurants in order to attend an event of this magnitude.  Not this year.  I am talking about SpiritFest 2008, the first Christian festival event in the area, hosted by Angel Peak Ministries.

Several months ago, a lovely woman named Launie called Vertical Radio to announce that she intended to put together a large concert, featuring Mercy Me.  We always dreamed of having Mercy Me in our area but it always seemed out of reach.  We were skeptical, yet quietly excited.  She asked if Vertical Radio would partner with her as the promoting station for SpiritFest 2008.  As the weeks went on, this concert became a festival event as Launie continued to call back, adding artist after artist to the line-up:  The Afters, Bethany Dillon, Daniel Rodriguez (aka “The Singing Policeman”), Marla Kavanaugh (an opera singer from New Zealand), Dennis “The Swan” Swanberg, Bibleman, Trilby Michel, and two local bands, Loruss and Paradigm.

Launie and her team from Angel Peak Ranch had a vision.  They felt confident that God wanted them to put this event together, so they moved forward in complete faith.  The ever-growing list of performers continued to amaze us, but the venue…  Well, there really aren’t words to express the venue.  Nestled in a rock formation, 9 miles Southeast of Bloomfield is a hidden treasure called Angel Peak Ranch.  As I drove to there the day before the event, I was grateful that some members of local worship band Paradigm were still there to guide me from the main road.  I was amazed at what I saw.  In the middle of the desert, there was a huge stage being set up for the event.  As I looked backstage, I imagined a circle of covered wagons in the Old West.  There were dozens of RV’s lined up in a horse-shoe shape to create a mini-village for the artists to rest and refresh.  The center seemed as if it was a page torn out of an outdoor patio catalog.  There was a floor of artificial turf topped with tables, chairs, and shade umbrellas.

The day finally arrived:  a hot, breezy, dusty day in New Mexico.  I think some of the artists were surprised by the rustic venue, yet they all had smiles on their faces.  After setting up a canopy and chairs for our group, we ventured backstage to help with any last minute details.  A van drove up, and a bright-eyed young woman hopped out to shake Launie’s hand.  As I walked over, she put her hand out to me and said, “Hi!  I’m Beth!”  Bethany Dillon was the sweetest, most genuine person I met that day.  She and her manager (and brother) Aaron spent time visiting with people and posing for photos.  They were spotted walking through the crowd several times before her performance.  At one point, she walked by our canopy and saw that my husband and our pastor were cooking hot dogs.  She mistook them for vendors and asked how much they were.  We all got a good chuckle when Kelly replied that she could have one for free.

Before the event, we were transported to another area where lunch was waiting for us.  I’m still not sure how the caterer set up back there, because we rode a horse-pulled wagon.  New artist, Trilby Michel and her husband, Tyler were very friendly.  He is in the military, and they currently live in Virginia.  After visiting with them, we discovered that they have roots in Farmington and actually met while attending Piedra Vista High School.  We also sat with Matt Fuqua, guitarist and vocalist for The Afters, and their sound guy, John.  These two are hysterical and extremely social.  Mercy Me posed with Darren, Cindy and I after their exploring adventures where they found animal bones, lizards, and a snake.

As the event actually began, the crowd grew.  We were treated to a special day of entertainment that the Four Corners area has never seen before.  Despite the heat and flying dirt, attendees had a great time worshipping the Lord together.  Bethany Dillon was just as real on stage as she was in person.  She shared her heart with us, as she told us about the love of her life and new husband, Shane (of Shane & Shane) before singing, “When You Love Someone.”  My favorite moment was when she wrapped up that love song with a comment about how great it was going to be to blow all the dirt out of her nose at the hotel that night.  As the sun set, The Afters played, the temperature dropped, and the excitement raised as the crowd tossed around beach balls and pushed forward to the stage to hear “Beautiful Love,” “Never Going Back to OK,” and “Keeping Me Alive.”

Around the time that the event was scheduled to end, Mercy Me finally took the stage.  These men have been blessed with a gift from God to entertain and to lead others to praise Him.  The crowd became one large family…the Body of Christ, worshipping together as Mercy Me performed and ministered with their testimony.  My heart fluttered like a butterfly, as I witnessed Benjamin, my 2-year old godson interacting with Bart Millard, as he spoke from the stage after performing their latest release, “You Reign” and inviting the crowd to sing the chorus to “Word of God Speak.”

Bart:  “The only reason we should be here is for Him to show up.”

Ben:  “Yea”

Bart:  “It’s not something we hope or cross our fingers for.  But when the Body of Christ calls upon His Name, He is faithful to show up.”

Ben:  “Yea!”

Bart:  “Because of those of you who have called upon His Name, every single one of us is standing in the presence of a Holy God.  And when He shows up, everything changes.  When He shows up, there’s hope.  There’s a chance.  There’s freedom.  There’s purpose.”

Ben:  “Purpose”

Then Bart sang, “Holy Spirit, fall on this place tonight.  And Jesus, anoint this place tonight.  We want to see You.  Oh, oh, we want to see You.”

Ben:  “Yea”

Bart:  “Let your glory rain. Let your glory rain tonight. Let it rain, let it rain, let it rain. Let your glory rain. Word of God speak. Would you pour down like rain, washing my eyes to see your majesty. To be still and know that You’re in this place. Please let me stay and rest in Your holiness. Word of God speak.”

This is just a glimpse of SpiritFest 2008. Vertical Radio was blessed to be a small part of this event through planning and promotion. Launie and her team from Angel Peak Ministries are already talking about their plans for the next event and praying for God’s guidance. They continue to have a vision for the Body of Christ to come together and worship as one. There was heat, there was dirt, there were challenges beyond their control, but the only thing that mattered was that God’s plan for this event was achieved: hundreds of His people gathered together and worshipped Him on Father’s Day.

Vertical Impact Comments

Here are several of the many comments and emails that came to us for our Vertical Impact Day. We are so humbled to know that God uses the ministry of Vertical Radio to impact so may lives on a daily basis. Thank you to everyone who called or sent in a comment. And also we want to say thank you to those who have decided to support Vertical Radio for the coming year. We could not do it without your support.

I love sharing stories with people about what Vertical Radio means to their lives.  We don’t often share that.  We go about our busy little days and we forget to pay attention to the little things.    What if Vertical Radio wasn’t around?  It would be awful. We moved here in ’98, so I’ve been listening since then.  We moved from a small town, and we had a small, little station, but, before that I came from Southern Ca.   It was awesome to be in Farmington and have this station that rocks.  I didn’t even have a station this good in CA. where we had a ton of them.  KNMI is the best. Our whole family listens.  Leann is four and she thinks KNMI rocks.  Our son, Danny, is 7 and he listens too.   I think KNMI is such an awesome ministry and I encourage friends to donate to the station.    K.C.

I love the music.  It’s the type of music I like and the words are just what I need to hear. It’s been good for me and my family and I appreciate having those encouraging words to do God’s will, comforting words in tough times, and just reassuring me of God’s love.  We need that today – we just need to keep going. Thanks for being there.    Linda

I listen to Vertical Radio because I love the Christian music.  It does me good on my way to work and on my way to school.  I thank God for putting KNMI on line.  I especially like Wendy because she gives me that special touch when she says her prayers.  I like all the beautiful, wonderful songs.    Anonymous

It’s a blessing to have the station here and we want to keep it around.  I’ve gone through some miscarriages and we’re in the process of adoption. Just the fact that I can turn on the radio and God will speak to me through a song and just help me through whatever I am going through.    Martha

Vertical Radio is awesome.  It gives me a chance to listen to good music with a nice message.  It helps my children and me to stay on the right path.  I love Vertical Radio.    Anonymous

I began listening to Vertical Radio a few months ago, because of my great friend, Wendy.  I continue to listen because of my crazy, hectic life with three little girls.  I can turn on the radio and it gives me a little bit of peace and helps bring me a little bit closer to God.  The music is so uplifting that it just puts a smile on your face and makes the day a lot better, no matter how good or bad a day you are having.  It’s hard, even with kids’ programs these days; to find something you don’t have to sensor.  And I don’t have to worry about that when we turn on KNMI – I know everything is going to be totally suitable for everyone in our family.  God bless Vertical Radio – I don’t know what I would do without it.    Shawna

I just love when Wendy says a prayer on the radio – it just makes my day.  I usually catch you when I’m between schools.  I’m a school teacher and I’m going between schools, so I don’t always hear the whole program.  But I feel like I’m really lucky if I get to hear the prayer.  Sometimes the music is just the right song for the way I’m feeling that day, or just the right song to lift me up.  Vertical Radio is just great.  I encourage people to support Vertical Radio.  We are very blessed to have it in our town and if we don’t support it, we may lose it.    Vicki

I listen to Vertical Radio because it’s a blessing to me every day to wake up and hear positive music that’s uplifting and spiritual.  We live in a world that is often negative and Vertical Radio is a positive influence on my life and the life of my children.    Anonymous

I like all the songs.  My favorite is “How Great is our God!”    Andrew  (Andrew is four and he’s been listening to Vertical Radio for four years)

I have a husband and four kids.  My kids were raised in the church when they were small.  When they got older, they kinda got away from the church.  They got married, and my husband and I just prayed for them and loved them. Now, two of them are back in the church and working for the Lord.  I encourage people to pray for their kids and love them -  they’ll be back to church.  I always listened to KNMI.  When we wake up, we turn the radio on for the whole day.  When I’m upset about something, or if I worried about my kids when they were still away, the songs lifted me up.  I’m glad we have this radio station in town.  We pray for the people who help at the station.  Sometimes it was hard when it was time to give our money to the station.  We had bills and stuff.  But we just prayed and the money was there.    Anne

I’ve just been in Farmington three months, moving from Southern AZ.   We had a contemporary Christian radio station there and I listened to that because that’s the kind of music I like to get into because it’s positive.  I know it’s not like other kinds of music that is going to be a negative influence me.  When we moved to Farmington, we found a church.  I asked one of the girls in the youth group what she listens to and she said Vertical Radio.  She told me about some of the songs they play and she told me her story about how Vertical Radio actually led her to believe in Jesus Christ.   She wasn’t a believer when she first listened to the station. She had been listening for a few weeks and she heard the song by Disciple,  “After the World”, which really spoke to her and that’s the night she became a Christian.   I decided to begin listening and when I turned on the radio that was the first song I heard.  It was perfect timing.  If I didn’t have the station, I would feel lost.  It would be like something important was missing from my life.    Ashley

You all have inspired me to follow God.  A lot of times I tend to fall and feel sad, and I turn on 88.9 and there is so much positive talk – “God is Great, God is awesome” and it feeds my spirit.  It’s a wonderful feeling to know there’s somebody out there who is willing to help you.  God is always there.  I live on the Navajo reservation in Shiprock and just to listen to positive people and positive feedback is just awesome.  I’ve seen God do so many great works in my life and in the lives of others.  It’s like the little mustard seed that grows into this giant vine that spreads out.  I love the radio station because it always has inspiring words, inspiring music, and something great to say to you.  It’s like God is speaking to you through the radio station.  It’s awesome.    Anonymous

In 2006, I went through a breakup with my ex-wife.  We went through a divorce last July and KNMI helped me heal.  I knew God, but I never listened to the station before.  God, Jesus and this station helped me heal.  You guys are just awesome.  I can’t say enough about your station.    Ernie

I’ve been listening to the station more often now, than in the past.   I’ve been getting more involved in the church lately. I’ve haven’t been listening to stuff I’m suppose to, and I started getting more involved in listening to Christian music and I like what you guys play.   The station is great at getting young people to follow the music.  It’s the kind of music they are use to listening to, but with a positive message.  I hope people will do as much as they can to support the station, so we can keep hearing positive music and great messages you put out into our community.    Julian

Thank you for listening to Vertical Radio and for supporting us! We couldn't do this without your support.

Thank you for a successful Vertical Share-A-Thon 2008

Thank you to everyone who pledged financial support for Vertical Radio for the coming year! The only way we can continue to broadcast quality Christian programming to the Four Corners, is through the financial support of our listeners. You make Vertical Radio possible. We continually thank God for using His people to support KNMI. We are truly humbled at the response this year.

Here are the totals:

The total raised towards our annual operating costs was $104,453.41

The total raised towards our special projects/equipment was $10,550.00

Once again, thank you to everyone who made a pledge of financial support for the coming year. Vertical Radio would not be here were it not for your willingness to give. We thank God for you and pray for you as well. Thanks and God bless.

Vertical Impact Day A HUGE Success!!

Vertical Impact Day was a HUGE success! Thank you to all who called in or sent in comments over the last few weeks and on Impact Day. All throughout the day we heard stories from you, our listeners, about how Vertical Radio has impacted your life. We laughed, we cried, we rejoiced, and most of all we praised our Father for who He is. We feel completely humbled, especially now, after hearing the many stories of how Vertical Radio has ministered to people from all walks of life, young and old. It has been our honor to bring quality Christian programming to the Four Corners area for over 28 years. Please consider supporting us financially for the coming year.

New Vertical Antenna!

A picture of our new antenna courtesy of Rex Lee

As part of our new Power Increase Project we were able to join with other local radio stations to purchase a brand new, state-of-the-art antenna to share. This new antenna will allow multiple radio stations to share the new equipment without interruption from each other's signal. It truly is an answer to prayer for everyone invloved. Our old antenna was 27 years old and in bad shape. It was a miracle that we were on the air all those years. Truly, what an amazing God we serve. Thank you, to those of you have been supporting us financially and to those of you who gave directly to our Power Increase Project.

If you have any questions, please call the KNMI Studios at (505)327-4357 or email us at email@verticalradio.org. When we complete the project in a few days, you will be receiving a cleaner and clearer Vertical Radio signal than ever before. KNMI has been operating at the same power level since the first year we went on the air over 27 years ago! So as you can imagine, we are excited for this long awaited power increase! Thank you for continuing to keep Vertical Radio your choice for Today's Christian Hits!

"Phil Wickham - Cannons"

INO recording artist, Phil Wickham, stopped by the Vertical Studios on Tuesday to promote his soon to be released sophomore album, "Cannons." Phil is an amazing artist with a passion to lead others in worship as well as a desire to challenge believers to reach out to those who don't know Christ. Our very own Wendy, host of The Lunch Crunch, talked with Phil over the air and allowed Phil to share his heart. Phil also played a few songs over the air and also had some time to sit down and enjoy lunch with the Vertical Radio staff. It was a memorable day and a great reminder of how blessed we are to work with some truly humble artists like Phil.

"Cannons" is due out 10/02/07
