Mike
Roberts
Mike has been the weathercaster on CHBC News since the early 1980's. Mike Roberts has one of the most challenging geographical areas in the country to deal with. That is one of the reasons why the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society honoured Mike in 1992 by naming him Canada's Top Weatherman.
Mike's experience has been extensive as producer and host of entertainment, current affairs and documentary programs - Nightwatch, Focus, Eco-Watch, Gold Trails and Ghost Towns (ten years), Pioneers and Places and now contributing features to Okanagan Now.
Mike has a relentless schedule. His commitments to the community include honourary chair of the Central Okanagan United Way, media liaison with the Central Okanagan Crimestoppers Society, The South Okanagan Child Development Center, and helping out wherever he can.
Mike is the happily married father of three grown sons, and grandfather to two grandsons and two granddaughters with whom he can be found playing on the weekends. He is obsessed with golf but has been known to fish, hunt and four-wheel drive. He loves apples and Okanagan wine, and would one day love to own a boat but as he says, "Sometimes it is cheaper to have a dream than to own one.
Chris Cleaver
Born in Kingston, Ontario in 1954, Chris came to Kelowna with his family in 1960. His father worked at CKOV radio as a creative writer. Chris had a natural attraction to broadcasting and he voiced commercials at the early age of 7. In the mid-60's, Chris "hung around" CHBC and took part in several productions.
In his off hours, he can be found relaxing with his "stereo cats" Ying and Yang, or playing golf badly, restoring vintage British sports cars, cooking and supporting the Okanagan Wine industry.
After spending time in Dawson Creek and West Vancouver, Chris returned to Kelowna in 1974. He started his full-time broadcast career at CKIQ Kelowna. He also spent time at CJCA-FM in Edmonton and CHIM-FM Kelowna. Radio positions included on-air news and sports, disc jockey, promotions manager, engineering, production manager - you name it, he's done it. One of his major accomplishments was coordinating the transition of CILK-FM from vinyl and tape music sources to CD's and the first automated, computer-based radio system in Kelowna.
In March, 1995, Chris joined the staff at CHBC as a part time engineer. He quickly became involved with many other aspects of the operation including back-up weather host for Mike Roberts. Although engineering and technical work continue to be Chris's prime focus, he enjoys the flexibility of working on both sides of the camera and is proud to represent "The Okanagan's Very Own CHBC".
